Player Video Analysis

Overview

The Player Video Analysis is a tool that the NHI developed to partner with their players throughout their career. Darryl Belfry continues to follow Patrick Kane in the National Hockey League by watching all his games and breaking down his shifts with his own personalized skill development chart. He keeps track of such things as his puck battles in the corner. He watches what he does when he is successful and what he does when he is not successful. If he is losing puck battles in the corner, he can send him video of drills that they did during their training sessions which will improve this statistic. Players are people and people will tend to slip back into bad habits. Darryl can monitor Kane’s play and communicate to him when he sees him slipping back into a bad habit. This is just one of the many observations Darryl makes for Kane.

The biggest problem for anyone who wants to improve as a player is to be able to demonstrate to the skill development trainers who they are as players and what type of program the trainers should build for the players. Statistics do very little in the way of defining players because the player could be playing in a very weak league. The NHI believes that it is important to understand what skills the player brings to the training sessions before he arrives. Does he know the stop turn? Does he know how to turn both ways? Does he know how to stop both ways or does he always favour one stop? All these skills and more lead to players losing a step or two and this translates into the player finding that he/she will be behind at some point when they get to the next step in their career.

Most traditional hockey schools charge players for a week or two of on ice development and then they do not see the player until he comes back the next year. At the NHI, we believe that in order to maximize your investment, we must be able to keep track of an individual throughout the year to monitor and mentor a player. Most players do not have the luxury of coming to the NHI on a weekly basis. We are not miracle workers and believe that in order to mentor a player, we must monitor their progress throughout their careers.

Some issues that crop up include:

  • Communicating with the Support Group (Parents)
    • All the players we have developed who made it to the NHL have had devoted and interested parents
    • However most parents do not get quality information form their coaches or trainers and often find themselves out of the loop when advice is being offered
    • The PVA allows our staff to monitor the player’s progress and advise the parents and players on how to become the best player that they can be
    • Parents love the opportunity to be kept in the loop and understand the concepts of what the NHI is delivering
  • Bad habits coming back
    • Watching video and showing bad habits creeping back into a player’s performance
    • The NHI can then show drills that the player did in their training to remind them of the difference
  • Growth spurts
    • This affects their stride and balance. It becomes extremely important to understand this and work hard on balance and motor skills to keep up to the body’s biomechanics
  • Body Contact starting in hockey
    • How does the player respond to this new dimension of the game? Can we look at their aggressiveness or lack thereof and point to drills required to help this?

Comprehensive Diagnostic:

  • NHI-VSP (Video Sharing Program)
  • Video Analysis and Illustration Portal
  • Clients create a personal video page which allows them to upload game video and for NHI to upload camp video
  • NHI uses the VSP as a communication portal to:
    • Build and maintain relationship
    • Provide Game and Habits assessment
    • Physical fitness and movement assessment
    • House camp video of players development
